Give your portrait a clean background
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP here. Up to 25 MB / 20 MP.
Start with one person in a clear head-and-shoulders photo.
Portrait cutout
For one person. Inspect hair, glasses, ears and clothing after removal.
Tips for a better result
Use even lighting and a clear view of one person. Complex hair and low contrast can leave edge defects. Retake the photo when important detail is missing. Check application rules before changing an official photo background.
Remove a portrait background, then finish the photo
- Choose a clear portrait. Use a single-person photo with the head and shoulders visible.
- Remove and inspect. Apply removal, then check hair, ears, glasses and clothing with Actual size and View original.
- Choose your output. Save transparent PNG or a solid-background JPG. Continue to the resizer when you need specific dimensions or a file-size limit.
Transparent PNG
Keep a portrait cutout for a presentation, design or profile graphic. The checkerboard in the preview represents transparency; it is not included in the PNG.
White or colour JPG
Choose a solid colour for a portrait or headshot. Follow the destination’s requirements for application photos. JPG cannot preserve transparency.
For portraits and headshots
Use this editor to prepare profile pictures, presentation cutouts and headshots. Check the full outline before saving: hair, glasses and pale clothing can be difficult to separate from a similar background.
Before editing an official photo, read its destination’s rules. For example, U.S. passport photo guidance asks for an original, unedited photo, and UK passport photo guidance requires photographs unaltered by computer software. Retake the photograph when the destination does not permit background replacement.

Questions about photo background removal
Which photos work best?
Start with a clear photo of one person, with the full head and shoulders visible. Even lighting and contrast between the person and the background help. This tool uses a portrait model; product photos, pets and group photos are outside its intended use.
Can I change the background without changing the face?
The tool extracts the person and places the cutout on your chosen background. It does not generate a new face. Segmentation can still remove or soften hair, glasses and clothing edges, so inspect the result at Actual size.
Can I use an edited portrait for a passport or application?
Check the issuing authority’s current instructions before changing an official photo. Some authorities require an unedited photograph. A white background does not establish compliance, and this tool does not certify acceptance.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The portrait model and its runtime load when you first apply removal. The image is processed on your device. Connection speed, available memory and device performance affect the time taken.
Should I download PNG or JPG?
Download Transparent PNG to retain a see-through background. JPG uses a solid background: white, or the custom colour you selected. Both downloads retain the source dimensions; the displayed file sizes are measured from the generated files.
Can I choose dimensions and a KB limit?
Choose Resize Photo or Resize for an Exam after processing. Your cleaned image opens in the resizer on a white background. Select the relevant preset or enter your own dimensions and file-size limits, then inspect the final crop and export checks.
Are my images uploaded?
The image-processing steps run in your browser. Continuing to the resizer stores a temporary image copy locally in your browser and removes that copy when the resizer reads it. Image contents and filenames are not included in workflow analytics.
Which files can I open?
Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 20 megapixels. PDF pages must first be saved as image files. The separate resizer accepts images up to 15 MB; a larger cleanup result can still be downloaded.
